Hiking is such a refreshing and uplifting exercise. For people wanting to do something fun and different, hiking is perfect. You can do it alone, with another person, or in a group.
Itâs so surreal when youâre outdoors and appreciate the true beauty of nature. Hiking is an extremely therapeutic and beneficial exercise.
BENEFITS OF HIKING
Hiking can reduce various respiratory risks. Stronger bones, muscles, and improved balance are major benefits of hiking.
You can create special bonds with family and friends after having your morning coffee, and then hiking (âBenefits of Hiking,â NPS).
Clearer thinking and more energy after a morning hike starts the day off positively.
BURNING CALORIES
Viewing the beautiful scenery in nature and using all your senses to explore new hiking territory is fun. You also enjoy the added benefits of burning calories in the process.
Longer and more intense hikes within a reasonable limit are advised to burn more calories.
The more you weigh, the more calories you burn. Also, carrying a backpack with a reasonable amount of weight helps to burn more calories (âHow Many Calories Does Hiking Burn,â Backpackerâs Pantry).
HEALTHY MIND AND PHYSICALLY FIT BODY
Hiking is not only a powerful workout for our cardiovascular system, but itâs a total body workout.
Improved blood sugar levels and blood pressure as well as reduced risk of heart disease are major benefits. Hiking can maintain weight and strengthen core and the lower body including hamstrings and quadriceps.
A major benefit is that mood is improved when exposed to the fresh air outdoors. Hiking has been known to reduce stress and anxiety, which improves overall well being (âHow Hiking is Good for Body and Mind,â Robinson).
GREAT PLACES TO HIKE
The hikes in Southern California are breathtaking. Murphy Ranch in Pacific Palisades is a trail that leads to ancient ruins with a historical theme.
The Santa Anita Canyon in Los Angeles County is a hike that stays nice and cool despite the season with a stunning waterfall and views.
Switzer Falls also in Los Angeles County is a great hike for families because itâs short and scenic where you can swim in the waterfalls and enjoy a barbecue at one of the BBQ pits (â10 Out of this World Hiking Spots in Southern California,â Back Pack Reverse).
WHAT TO WEAR ?
Wearing shoes that protect from sharp rocks and providing good footage for wet surfaces is very important.
A hat will protect from direct sun rays. Since hiking is more ideal when cooler, wearing a warm jacket is advised.
Very comfortable pants, but not thin yoga pants or tights, that are durable are important to wear as you want the pants to stretch and at the same time protect from scratching against tree branches or rocks (âWhat to Wear Hiking,â REI).
BEST WEATHER AND TIME TO HIKE
The best weather to hike is when it is cool, calm, and pleasant.
Hiking in the early to late morning as it is much cooler, such as between 10 am â 12 pm, is ideal in spring to hotter summer months.
Late afternoon tends to become extremely hot and not advised. The best temperature for hikes ranges between 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (âHiking in Hot Weather,â McKinney).
